History’s Guns: M2 Machine Gun | Shooting USA

John Browning’s .50-cal machine gun is still on the battlefield today, even though it is considered an historic icon. The M2, or Ma Deuce, as it is known to admirers, fires a half-inch diameter projectile at the rate of 500 rounds per minute, and is effective at nearly a mile and a quarter.

“It’s one of the greatest firearms of the 20th Century and the 21st Century, and it will be for at least another generation,” says U.S. Army Infantry Branch Historian, David Stieghan. “It’s still a basic design that John Browning came up with. It is simple, it is rugged, and it does the job.”

For nearly a century, it has done the job for Americans going to war. The Army officially adopted the Browning .50 Cal in 1921, and it has become the standard to which the world’s full-auto firearms are compared.
