Is This Solid State Battery Too Late?
Solid State Batteries – Revisited. Get Surfshark VPN at https://surfshark.deals/undecided and enter promo code UNDECIDED for 83% off and 3 extra months for free! Solid state batteries have been hyped for years as a silver bullet for making EVs mainstream, improving consumer electronics, and … well … everything. It’s 2022 and they still aren’t here in any meaningful way, but there have been interesting advancements that are worth exploring. However, with several other battery technologies popping up offering similar or better energy density, lifespan, safety, and costs, (all of which are solid state batteries’ big sales pitch) is solid state still the future of energy storage tech? Let’s see if we can come to a decision on this.

Seems like new technology is going to outpace application everywhere. Is this an outdated statement?
Not sure why u placed price high the priority list.
If a battery has 4000 cycles and another has 400 than u can say u need to buy the cheaper one 10 times over the product’s age which makes it more expensive.
If u but a car for 3 years, the gap in kw per kg is meaningless. The car may cost 5000$ more, but within the price of a car and taking into account aging, it’s negligible.
I would say its a sweet spot of trade offs. Each case needs to be evaluated separately.
U also need to take into account material availability. Niobium is mainly found i. China and russia and since were getting into a world war, may not be the best option.
Even if a war wasn’t here, it’s relatively rare and is available now because we don’t widely use it.
If u start making it the number one go to material, it will become scarce rapidly, increasing the price.
The prediction of battery tech is way more than the sum of the technical properties. Its heavily effected by foreign considerations.
Matt, love your channel, my fav on YouTube, congrats
Goldman Sachs of Science
What about Dual Carbon batteries?
Surprised Tesla hasn't announced a new battery technology that has unlimited energy, never needs to be recharged, is safe, only weighs 1kg and will be available next year.
We have the technology on the shelf to replace the fossil fuels that are destroying our planet on the shelf. And, solar and wind are cheaper.
The challenge is battery storage for when the sun doesn’t shine and wind doesn’t blow. I don’t think I am overstating things when I say this is a life and death race for our species.
Great data points. Many exciting advancements in energy storage and durability. Thanks for your work Matt!
But it still uses lithium
This is the ONE OF THE BEST science chanel on I ever seen…. and I seen A LOT!!! 😀 GREAT JOB!! ❤🤩👍👍👍
another tesla shill for no reason, their batteries are regular lithium. bigger ones does not improve the science.
I love this YouTube channel. I wonder if anyone can tell me why I've been watching videos on new battery technologies for at least 5 years but we are still using lithium. How long does it take to bring innovation to market for crying out loud. I would think these inventors and inventors would want to take over and get paid.
any battery with better energy density is a step in the right direction. imagine any battery that's 2.5 times more energy dense! it saves weight and space! its awesome
Boring
ProLogium from Taiwan will mass produce solid state battery in 2023. Safer, better density , Charge up faster and it's cheaper to produce and to recycle
What about the use of solid state batteries in smaller devices or to replace other types of rechargeable batteries? It seems the like the tech has lots of potential even without the electric car market.
In my opinion 4000 cycles / 10years is not nearly enough. My current Car is 15 years old and has 260000km on the odometer, and yeah it surely got some maintenance in between but nothing in the range of a battery replacement on an EV. It still has a range of 1200km and runs like day 1 but with a battery that’s predictably deteriorating after just 10 years I can’t imagine that that would be very sustainable especially EVs with their energy intense production should be used as long as possible..
> It's still early days
I swear you say that in every video
The Second Law.
Short of the fantasy miracle of graphene batteries everyone's been cheering for for years…
…you're still just butting your head up against the Second Law of Thermodynamics with literally ANY battery.
I'm curious to learn what the host thought of Elon Musk's recent warning.
That the abandonment utterly of petroleum will lead to the collapse of western civilization.
What is not mentioned in the video is cobalt, and the HR issues that come with it. Lithium is also a cause for concern given local pollution at the production sites. At least one of the competing solutions mentioned in the video still has those issues, albeit possibly in smaller quantities, which will not help much, as total production volume will skyrocket anyway, offsetting any improvements due to less cobalt per unit. I hope it will not be one of those solutions that win out in the end.
Green hydrogen is the future
Disgusting, you only babbling nonsense and creating many trash video for content
You do a great job!
not if there are solid state batteries that are lighter and/or have more energy density; EVs based on lithium are typically over 4000 lbs which means they cancel out the efficient motors as they are heavy to move; and they take more energy to build. The grid has to be made green also to make any of this of benefit.
By 2024 manufacturers must put American lithium batteries and cars in order to get discounts Ev tax credit
Just like electric cars are not the silver bullet
