Cutting The World's Longest Rifle To Find The Perfect Barrel Length
What is the perfect barrel length, and how long is “too long”? In this weeks video we show how barrel length affects bullet velocity.

▬ About MDT ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
MDT was born out of a single purpose: to provide better value and better accuracy for precision rifles. The first MDT chassis was developed from the ground up based on the needs of shooters.
Our engineers verified every function and feature based on the input from competitive shooters. The end result was a game-changing product called the TAC21 that continues to perform at the range, in the field and in competitions around the world.
Today, MDT chassis, magazines and accessories are still developed the same way.
We collaborate, question and verify our concepts with precision shooters from around the globe to ensure that every MDT product is designed with the same single purpose: to provide our customers with the absolute best product possible.

Would have been interesting to use slower burning powders in the longer barrel.
This could have been a great video, but it looks like the only real effort put into it was paying the barrel maker.
No need for a bayonet on this one!
Making a gun that the muzzle is over the horizon from the breech is one way of defeating the coriolis effect.
This type of testing has already been tested by militaries and there's already data available about the limits of positive gains in velocity and energy delivery in correlation to barrel length. There's also information about barrel twist ratio and how it correlates downrange with varying barrel lengths but I don't know much about that information. This test makes me wonder how much your rough crowning is affecting both your speeds and impact points.
That was fun.
barrel is nevet too long. only not practical.
well time to see how long you can make it now
There is no such thing as perfect Barrel lengh, It all depends on what you use it for, Hunting any lengh from 18 to 24 , and if you add a brake 2" pluss, Me 20" for close and fast like in Lever (Blr my faw) still use my 1917Enfiel 30-06 22", Don't need a 26" Long range Hunting or Target Rifle and if buying a New one 7mm or 30 Cal 24"max, add a Brake and its 26" , Target, your choice is max
That rifle was suicide proof
You get to a point where the rifling starts to slow your shot
It's so funny looking 😂 same energy as joker pulling out that really long revolver in the old Batman movie
Hi MDT. I've got 2 suspicious scam replies to my previous comment. Please check it out.
There's always a sweetspot.
So when is the XLR Gun/Barrel Cut Down Project starting?
Anyone know what twist they did for the barrel?
Those americans … Not surprised that their country is falling apart ^^
What cartridge are you shooting lol? I haven't seen it mentioned yet I'm 1:30 in
Imagine using a proper cartridge designed for a 69" rifle barrel, one with enough progressive-burning propellent, to send that same caliber down to the target
that was sick, i would love to see how a PRC round would run out from a barrel that long. You would think that the farther the bullet went down the barrel it would lose back pressure, but it looked like it picked up. Very impressive.
Carefull. I see alot of replies says shortlisted winners. This might be someone running a scam.
Pre WW1 powers would love this thing.
I think my Mosin with the bayonet attached is still longer.
Cant wait to see that Barrel in Tarkov.
That is Science!! thanks for all effort
Well clearly you’ve just discovered future of rifle design lol such an odd result
14"
Putting your thumb on that scope to pull your bolt up is a bad habit. Not saying it's enough to move your crosshairs right away, but over time it will eventually move it.
the rifle for dudes who drive lifted trucks
Beautifully done ! Question: why didn’t you recrown the barrrl after each shot to BBSs see if grouping changed?
I need memes people. triple bipods? folding stock on a gun with a 6 foot barrel? oh there is so much goodness to be had. gonna make a few of my own, too
I've cut my barrel down to 18"/45cm on my hunting rifle. It's .308 win. Absolute maximum range I'll shoot animals is 200yards/200m though. I've never had a problem.
Rockets, to maximise efficiency, calculate the exhaust to be at atmospheric pressure by the time it leaves the engine bell. I wonder if extending the barrel to the point the gasses in it are atmospheric would have the same efficiency.
i would love to se this monster with some handloads made specific for this
Giga Chad Barrel
Is there any way to request either the raw data or have the graph re-plotted with SD error bars? I think that'd tell a very interesting story and let you come up with a pretty good curve-fit for that cartridge.
distance to target 500 yards… bullet flight distance upon leaving barrel… 100 yards…
Reverse engineering AT rifles… lel
being a physics guy… I think whats happening here is that the powder burn/ barrel pressure starts leveling off at around the 46 inch mark. one has to remember that the more barrel that the bullet travels through, the bearing surface of the bullet is also wearing away so the resistance is also dropping more and more as it travels down towards the muzzle.
clearly what should have been done instead was the addition of a bayonet lug
now make half of the long barrel a supressor
You can joust with that goddamn thing
I love it.
I have shot that 175gr FGMM in my 26" .308 and I get 2750fps
a real man's gun
Looks like the gun the Sharpshooter had in Baron Munchhausen 😉
NOOOO!!!! why did you stop a 19!!! Pistol barrel lengths to please!?
You could have just asked an engineer. Answer can be found mathematically.
